Board-Certified Pain Medicine Specialist Dr. John Mak Recognized By NJ Top Docs For 2026

With extensive experience diagnosing and treating complex pain conditions, Dr. Mak takes a multi-disciplinary approach to pain management, utilizing a comprehensive range of therapies tailored to each patient’s needs. His treatment strategies may include physical therapy, medication management, ultrasound-guided injections, and advanced interventional procedures, all aimed at addressing the underlying source of pain rather than simply masking symptoms.

For Dr. Mak, effective treatment begins with listening.

“The first step in trying to treat a patient, is to listen to the patient,” Dr. Mak said. “Allowing the patient to give a full narration of their pain allows me to better accurately diagnose their cause of pain and tailor a treatment plan to them. Being able to make the proper diagnosis and come up with the appropriate treatment to relieve the patient’s suffering is very gratifying.”

This patient-centered philosophy guides Dr. Mak’s care across a broad spectrum of pain-related conditions, including cervicogenic headaches, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), and chronic joint and nerve-related pain. He also performs a variety of advanced procedures such as epidural steroid injections, spinal cord stimulation, stellate ganglion blocks, lumbar sympathetic injections, discography, and joint injections, helping patients access minimally invasive treatment options designed to improve comfort and restore function.

Passionate about staying at the forefront of pain medicine, Dr. Mak has a particular interest in the evolving role of nerve stimulation technology and other innovative treatments designed to target pain at its source.

“My specialties of pain management and anesthesiology demand superior interpersonal skills, but also require great diagnostic skills, an in-depth understanding of human physiology and the ability to perform intricate procedures,” Dr. Mak said. “I am excited to be at the forefront of innovative technology of utilizing nerve stimulation to treat pain at the spinal cord level or at the specific nerve that is causing pain.”

Dr. Mak earned his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, followed by an Internal Medicine internship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He then completed his residency in anesthesia and critical care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center–Harvard Medical School before pursuing a Pain Management fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center through Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mak enjoys hiking, golfing, and spending time with his active sons, bringing the same appreciation for balance and well-being to his personal life that he encourages in his patients.
