Dr. Lesley A. Fein Awarded NJ Top Doc Distinction for 2025

NJ Top Docs has reviewed and approved Dr. Lesley A. Fein based on merit for 2025. Dr. Lesley A. Fein has devoted her medical career to advancing the understanding of complex, infection-driven illnesses. Early in her journey, she demonstrated a profound commitment to public health while studying in South Africa during the 1970s. As one of four students, she helped establish The Muldersdrift Clinic near Johannesburg, delivering free medical care, vaccinations, nutrition education, and reproductive health services to farm laborers in an area with the highest infant mortality rate in the region. By the time she left in 1977, the clinic served more than 10,000 patients and successfully reduced infant mortality to the lowest level in the area. The clinic remains an integral part of medical training in Johannesburg today.

Dr. Fein earned her Bachelor of Science with Honors from the University of the Witwatersrand before completing her medical degree with distinction at George Washington University Medical School, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and received the American Medical Women’s Association Award for Academic Excellence. She later earned a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Columbia University, building a strong foundation in research and population health.

Since 1984, Dr. Fein has focused her clinical work on the relationship between infectious diseases and autoimmune conditions. Board-trained in both rheumatology and internal medicine, she has treated thousands of patients previously diagnosed with autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome—only to uncover underlying chronic infections. Her work, supported by peer-reviewed medical literature, has helped reshape diagnostic and treatment approaches for these complex conditions.

Dr. Fein is nationally recognized as a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease, Bartonella, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and other infection-related chronic illnesses. She was the first physician to report Bartonella infection in patients with Lyme disease, proposing its classification as a tick-borne illness—an insight that significantly advanced medical understanding in the field.

Alongside her clinical practice, Dr. Fein has made lasting contributions as a researcher, educator, and public advocate. She has taught epidemiology to medical and public health students at Columbia University and Mount Sinai Hospital, trained internal medicine residents at Mount Sinai, and instructed rheumatology fellows at NYU. She currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Rutgers University.

Since 1993, Dr. Fein has delivered more than 14 invited presentations at major medical conferences and has played an active role in health policy and advocacy. She has served as a member of the National Lyme Caucus, the National Health Legislation Task Force, and as an Advisor to the Lyme Disease Foundation. In 2008, she served as Master of Ceremonies for a landmark conference that brought together practitioners treating Lyme disease and chronic fatigue syndrome for the first time. Her research has been supported by grants from Hoechst Laboratories and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Fein is also a respected author and media expert. She co-authored Beating Lyme Disease, wrote the foreword for Confronting Lyme Disease, was featured as a top diagnostician on Medscape, and appeared on the Discovery Channel’s Mystery Diagnosis, helping to raise awareness of complex, often misunderstood illnesses.

In recognition of her integrity and expertise, Dr. Fein was nominated by the Governor of New Jersey and confirmed by the New Jersey Senate to serve on the Medical Practitioner Review Panel, which reviews cases of physician misconduct and reports to the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners.

Through decades of clinical care, research, teaching, and advocacy, Dr. Fein has remained steadfast in her mission to improve outcomes for patients with chronic, infection-related illnesses—earning the trust of both her peers and the patients she serves.
