Dr. Joseph G. Shami of the Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey (GANJ) has been reviewed and approved by NJ Top Docs for 2022. Dr. Shami is dual board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Heis also multilingual, with fluency in English and Italian and the ability to speak fully in Spanish and Arabic.
In addition to his position at GANJ, Dr. Shami was a trustee at IPA of St. Joseph’s Health for 20 years and is the Medical Director of the St. Joseph’s Health Heartburn Center. He was a clinical assistant professor at the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey for 25 years.
During some of his time with GANJ, Dr. Shami was also Emeritus Chief for the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, totaling 14 years overall in the position.
Dr. Shami completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. He also received his medical degree from the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, Italy and a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey.

- High Resolution Esophageal Manometry
- pH testing
- Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication or TIF
