January is National Stalking Awareness Month
In January 2004, the National Center for Victims of Crime launched National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM) to increase the public’s understanding of the law-breaking offense of stalking. NSAM emerged from the work of the Stalking Resource Center, a National Center program funded by the office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice, to raise awareness about stalking and help develop and implement multidisciplinary responses to the crime.
Since 2004, resource centers in collaboration with the government have worked hard to raise awareness and implement laws that would decrease the crime while increasing law enforcement’s response to it as well. In January 2oo4, the National Center for Victims of Crime launched the first observance of National Stalking Awareness Month and supported communities across the nation in planning the event.
Over the years, work has been done to raise awareness about the realities of stalking, especially for the 7.5 million individuals stalked each year in the U.S. The White House issued the first Presidential Proclamation on National Stalking Awareness Month. Additionally, in the years to follow the White House convened it’s first-ever National Round table on stalking bringing together researchers, survivors, and many more.
You can promote National Stalking Awareness Month and enhance your knowledge by attending events or even downloading website banners, magnets, or buttons. Awareness can also be raised by creating support groups, PSA’s and news releases to send out to your community.
