Dr. Peter S. Hersh of Cornea and Laser Eye Institute has been reviewed and approved by NJ Top Docs based on merit for 2025. Peter S. Hersh, MD, FACS, is the Director of Cornea and the Research Division at CLEI. A graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Hersh earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School, followed by specialized fellowship training in corneal surgery.

After several years on the full-time faculty at Harvard, Dr. Hersh founded the Cornea and Laser Eye Institute (CLEI) in New Jersey in 1995, dedicated to advancing clinical care and research in LASIK, keratoconus, and corneal surgery. He also established the CLEI Center for Keratoconus in 2002, a specialized center focused on treatment and research for this condition. In addition to directing CLEI, Dr. Hersh is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and the Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division at Rutgers Medical School. He also serves as a Visiting Research Collaborator at Princeton University. Dr. Hersh’s expertise is exclusively focused on corneal surgery, including LASIK. At Princeton, he collaborates with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering to explore new laser applications for eye surgery.

Dr. Hersh has played a pivotal role in several groundbreaking FDA clinical trials for excimer laser LASIK and other surgical corrections. Notably, he was the lead author of the clinical study that led to the first-ever FDA approval of laser eye surgery for nearsightedness in 1995. He also presented the Conductive Keratoplasty procedure to the FDA in 2002, leading to its approval. Patients from across the United States seek Dr. Hersh’s expertise due to his pioneering research, involvement in clinical trials, and his ongoing dedication to the field. His work has been featured in major media outlets including the Today Show, PBS, America Tonight, Fox News, People Magazine, The New York Times, and more.

Dr. Hersh is a member of the American Ophthalmological Society and has received the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an honor given to fewer than 1% of eye surgeons. In 2020, Dr. Hersh was named a Life Fellow of AAO. Dr. Hersh has trained over 1,000 eye surgeons in excimer laser refractive surgery techniques and is a former recipient of the Teacher of the Year award from the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology. His lectures have taken him to countries worldwide, including France, China, India, Brazil, and many more.

He is also dedicated to global health initiatives, bringing education and eye care to developing countries, and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary International for his philanthropic work.
