Melissa Mascaro, MD, CAQSM, a leading Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist in New Jersey, has been named a 2024 NJ Top Doctor. With a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to her patients, Dr. Mascaro is celebrated for her innovative approach to sports medicine, which focuses on individualized and flexible care for athletes of all levels.
Dr. Mascaro completed her fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut, where she trained under renowned experts, including Dr. Thomas Trojian and Dr. Giselle Aerni. During her fellowship, she served as a team physician for UConn athletics, providing care for the National Championship-winning UConn Women’s Basketball Team, as well as the Men’s Basketball Team. Her extensive experience also includes coverage of major events such as MMA fights, the Lake Placid Ironman, the NYC Marathon, and the Boston Marathon.
Prior to her fellowship, Dr. Mascaro completed her residency in Family Medicine at Hackensack Mountainside Family Medicine, where she served as academic chief resident. She earned her medical degree from St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine and holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University, where she was a full-scholarship Division 1 gymnast and co-captain of her NCAA team.
In private practice, Dr. Mascaro has been instrumental in developing primary care sports medicine within the local community. She believes in providing care that fits the unique needs and schedules of her patients, offering options such as virtual visits, extended consultations, and comprehensive wellness plans tailored to each athlete’s competitive season.
Dr. Mascaro’s extensive team coverage experience includes working with Seton Hall University Athletics, Montclair State University, New Jersey City University, and Stevens Institute of Technology Athletics, as well as Montclair, Cranford, and Nutley public schools. She also serves as a consultant physician for USA Gymnastics, covering events like the Kellogg’s Tour of Olympic Gymnasts and the AT&T American Cup.
As a certified ringside physician for USA Boxing, Dr. Mascaro provides coverage for Golden Gloves and Diamond Glove events. She also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Seton Hall University and St. George’s School of Medicine. Her research interests include injury prevention in adolescent athletes and the female athlete, and she has contributed to the field through published book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations at national and international sports medicine conferences.
In her practice, Dr. Mascaro performs diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound-guided injections and manages non-operative treatment of sports injuries. She is a certified hyperbaric physician and a former Medical Director for Restorix Health. Dr. Mascaro is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine.
