 Dr. Michael Bilof founded Garden State Bariatrics & Wellness Center in 2007.  Prior to that, Dr. Bilof was a successful and busy vascular surgeon in NJ. During his time as a vascular surgeon, he continuously saw patients that were in chronic, oft times terminal condition as a result of Type II Diabetes. Dr. Bilof believed there had to something more to get ahead of the diseases associated with his morbidly obese vascular patients. Dr. Bilof has been 100% bariatrics since 2003.

 Dr. Bilof not only restarted his entire medical career in 2003 – along the way he was credentialed and, recertified again in 2009, as a Center of Excellence surgeon and practice (and continues as a COE surgeon and practice) he was awarded ‘I Love My Doc campaign’ put on by St. Barnabas every year it was run; received top honors as a Top Surgeon by the American Council of America for Surgeons; Patient Choice Awards. In addition, he held the position of Medical Director at St. Barnabas for the Center of Excellence Bariatric Program for years and was given the highest position for the bariatric program at St. Barnabas Medical Center – as Section Chief for the Center of Excellence Bariatric Program. 

Dr. Bilof holds memberships from the New Jersey Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS), the Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgery (SLS) and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP). Dr. Bilof is also the VP of the NJ Chapter of ASMBS.

 Dr. Basil Yurcisin is a seasoned bariatric and general surgeon, trained at one of the world’s top fellowship programs in bariatrics and minimally invasive surgery- Duke University Medical Center in NC. GSBWC looked for just the right combination of superior surgeon, highly trained (with thousands of surgeries performed before he joined them) and an unwavering, authentic passion and commitment to patients. He has performed several hundred surgeries to date and is relentless when it comes to ensuring his patients get the top care possible. He interacts with other bariatric surgeons world-wide and is a resource for all of our patients – whether it is for bariatric counseling/support or a patient’s general surgery needs. Born in Buffalo, NY, the eldest of 9 (so patience is a virtue he was born into); he relocated to New Jersey to join the team at GSBWC. 

While Dr. Yurcisin’s training is world-class and his experience impeccable, Dr. Yurcisin has a warm and generous bedside manner; a compassion and openness with all of his patients and the ability to support patients with every facet of their medical needs (if he cannot help – he finds someone who can). Dr. Yurcisin takes his role as your medical advocate seriously – and does so with a smile and a sense of humor – a warrior to help you eradicate your medical illnesses with the warmth and compassion of an old friend.
