Judith Mamah, DMD of Designing Smiles Dental has been reviewed and approved as a NJ Top Dentist based on merit for 2026.For Dr. Mamah, dentistry has always been about seeing the person behind the smile. With more than three decades in the profession, she has developed a career centered on comprehensive care, patient education, and creating an environment where people feel genuinely comfortable seeking the treatment they need.
After establishing Designing Smiles Dental in Hackensack in 1999, Dr. Mamah quickly became known for taking a thoughtful approach to even the most complex dental concerns. Her practice encompasses restorative and cosmetic dentistry, with particular expertise in full mouth reconstruction, complex oral rehabilitation, implants, and orthodontic care. Her training in multiple areas of dentistry allows her to look at a patient’s needs from a broader perspective and develop treatment plans tailored to their individual goals.
That comprehensive mindset was shaped by an international journey in dentistry. Dr. Mamah began her education in Nigeria, earning her Bachelor of Dental Surgery before coming to the United States to continue her training. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1998. While at Penn, she also served as an assistant preclinical lab instructor for the Program for Advanced Standing Students, helping foreign-trained dentists navigate the transition into the U.S. dental system. Her experience as both a student and mentor has remained an important part of her connection to the profession.
Dr. Mamah is equally attentive to the experience patients have while receiving care. She understands that visiting the dentist can be difficult for some individuals, particularly those who have spent years avoiding treatment because of anxiety. Through patient education, a gentle approach, and sedation options when appropriate, she works to replace fear with a greater sense of comfort and confidence.
Her influence also extends well beyond the walls of her practice. Dr. Mamah regularly participates in community health fairs, provides dental care and education to children, and volunteers through the Donated Dental Services program. Giving back has become an extension of the same philosophy that guides her clinical work: quality dental care should be paired with compassion, education, and a commitment to the wellbeing of the community.
This year, Dr. Mamah was the only dentist selected to present at the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas Annual Scientific Convention in Chicago, speaking to an audience of more than 500 medical professionals about the relationship between oral health and overall wellness.
Dr. Mamah’s professional involvement continues to reflect her commitment to lifelong learning. She holds fellowships with the Academy of General Dentistry, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, while remaining active in several leading dental organizations.
Yet for Dr. Mamah, the most meaningful part of dentistry cannot be measured by titles or accolades. It can be found in the patient who finally feels comfortable at the dentist, the individual who regains confidence in their smile, or the person whose overall health benefits from receiving the care they had once put off.
